I have been radically opened to parent rights and the rights of children with disabilities after going through mediation with the local SAD only to find that the mediation process is used by SAD under the guidance of the states DOE to secure the parents legal and binding release of the SAD from any responsibilities from circumstances around a case in exchange for basic access to FAPE and the fulfillment of IDEA and MURSER requirements. The desperation to act is overwhelming. After years of struggle, and the discovery that my child's rights as a person of disabilities was violated, I face a wall. Would you consider mentioning my newly-published memoir? I would be happy to exchange blog feeds as well. Seven Wheelchairs: A Life beyond Polio was recently released by The University of Iowa Press. The memoir is a history -- an American tale -- of my fifty year wheelchair journey after being struck by both bulbar and lumbar poliomyelitis after a vaccine accident in 1959. The Press says Seven Wheelchairs gives "readers the unromantic truth about life in a wheelchair, he escapes stereotypes about people with disabilities and moves toward a place where every individual is irreplaceable." Other reviewers have called Seven Wheelchairs "sardonic and blunt," "a compelling account," and "powerful and poetic." I hope you can mention Seven Wheelchairs on your blog. We all live different disability stories, I know, but perhaps if you find the memoir worthwhile, you might want to recommend the book to others who are curious about what polio or disability in general. Of course, the book is also available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. -- Gary Presley www.garypresley.com SEVEN WHEELCHAIRS: A Life beyond Polio Fall 2008 University of Iowa Press |

Hey ladies ; Good job I applaud you. I need some help with education with my almost 5 year old very smart grandaughter with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 . The school system here sucks and the parents give their children (with a fever and ill )motrin and send their kids to school. Then my granddauighter that I am primary caregiver for gets very sick. I can not get the school to do video conferencing and I am clueless on home schooling. Any ideas? I do not work because I care for Lizzy so we can not afford a tutor. |

I want everyone that signs this guestbook to join us in our efforts to provide support, advocacy and humor to families fighting the tremendous fight against schools and communities that abuse, neglect, discriminate and just overall don't give a crap about our kids... We need muscle and people that can help support and educate fellow members in all 50 states!!! We love and value our members! I vow to (and have already) give(n) blood, sweat and tears to MFH2's cause. This is an organization that works diligently to improve the sanity and senses of humor of our members and beyond!!! |

Love your site. My daughter just turned 18 and we continue the ever present legal battles over what is "right" for her. She has Rett Syndrome and attends a great school in Providence, RI. Check them out: Meeting Street School |

My husband and I are just begining our journey, having found out today our son tested at a high level fuctioning mental retarded. Is that even politically correct anymore? We are trying to wrap our heads around that and what it means, while trying to figure out how we are going to bring his school on board with us. |

What is involved in starting one of these groups? I have a parent group at the High School level that may be ready, I know I am! You would NOT BELIEVE what the High School Special Ed. teacher can get away with here! Please someone email me as to what is involved in operating a group such as this. Thanks. |
