Sports day

Does anybody have any good ideas for fun non-competitive games/activities for sports day? We are asking all our parents to come along and join in with their own children - are we mad?

Re: Sports day

why non-competitive?
We have races - the usual obstacle course types. I do ask all parents to yell very loudly and to clap at the end when all of the children have finished.
All of the children get a medal for competing.

Re: Sports day

we too do egg and spoon races, sack races, obstacle races and running races,3 legged races, all children get a certificate on the day for taking part and a medal they made the day or two before.
Everyone goes away feeling they achieved something.

Re: Sports day

cant abide non competitive sports day. its a good learning curve for later in life i think.
surely you can put across the excitement of taking part medals for winners and stickers for every one for being there

Re: Sports day

We have our sessions for one week set out as a sports week. Instead of outdoor play waether permitting we have sessional sports which parents are invited back to see in the last 1/2 hour of the session. We have 2 different races each day i.e Monday Dressing up race and potato and spoon Tuesday Water race and obstacle course We prepare certificates and for each race the children have one sticker added to their certificate so by Friday if a child attends 5 sessions they have 10 stickers or 3 sessions have 6 stickers.
The staff organise this this year its based on Atlhletics 2005 last year it was Olympics and Euro 2004. We find it works well as it is in small groups and we also use it as a fund raiser sponsor forms go home to sponsor children per race Over the last 3 years we raised over £1000 per year.
This way its not so competitive as 3 race at a time and sometimes in relay.

Re: Re: Sports day

We did a grand prix one year.Parents had to decorate a cardboard box as a sports car.then we had races according to ages with children in car. We made straps to tie cars round then.all the dads and mums received a certificate of merit and all the children got a cardboard cup with their names on. this went down well. At the ene all the children had bottles of soda water which they shook up and sprayed at their parents, good fun was had by all.

Re: Sports day

We set up a mini obstacle course in a large field and the children run around as many times as they want, each lap getting a sticker. So they end up covered in coloured stickers. This a great fun raiser, they get parents/friend to sponser how many laps they do!
Then we end up picnicing together.

Re: Sports day

We do a really fun relay race called "milk the cow". The children are in teams with a bucket of water in front of each line and an empty bucket for each team further along the track. The first child in each team is given a pink rubber glove. They have to fill the glove with water from the bucket and run down and tip it into the other bucket. They then run back and give the glove to the next in the team. Keep going until everyone has had a turn. The team with the most water in their filling-up bucket is the winner.
