Article on Training for Ultra-endurance running
Some may remember I posted some thoughts and a link about some research that Paul Murgatroyd is doing on training for ultra running. Paul is a sport science lecturer at Lincoln University and ran the MdS in 2007. Paul sent me a link today on his initial thoughts so far. Something that probably complicates ultra running research is the need to consider the gastro-intestinal system and how to obtain sufficient energy / nutrition mid as well as pre and post race (unlike shorter races where pre and post are the concern). I have been struck by the sheer variety of feeding and drinking strategies taken by different folk. I'd assume they all work and that people have explored several options before focussing on one strategy. If this is the case it will mean that providing ultra training advice might be very difficult without some kind of gastro-intestinal profiling. |

A really interesting article by Paul, which serves as a start point, as he says for more thorough application of sports science to ultra running. Is there any other physical activity that demands so much of the participant but has a broader range of age, ability, training, focus, nutritional and preparation data ? I find it really intersting that (obviously) his findings reflect the WHW race, a wide spectrum of people arriving at the start line via a myriad of differing preparatory paths and giving it their all. Maybe the attraction to running ultras is indeed because it fits no scientific norm. One mans perpeteum gel is another mans heinz soup as it were. |
