Fri/Sat 16/17 May 2008 Two Day Training Run
Advance notice for anyone who would like to join us. Ian, Neal and I so far have planned a two day run as follows .... Friday 16 May Balmaha to Bridge of Orchy (43miles) starting at 9am and then staying at the Bridge of Orchy Hotel. You can either go for the cheap option (me - £13 in the bunkhouse) or the up market version (Ian - ask him about the price in the hotel!!) Saturday 17 May Bridge of Orchy to Fort William (35miles)starting at 9am. You are welcome to join us for the two days or just the Saturday (or just the Friday). If you want to do the two days you will need to book a bed at the Hotel soon as it does get booked up with whw walkers. (phone number - 01838 400208) We can sort out logistics nearer the time but if you want to join us leave a post on this thread and keep checking here for details. Last year I found this two day run really helpful. Particularly the Saturday when my legs were sore from the Friday. It was good preparation for what the last 35 miles were going to be like on the race. Though thinking about it my legs were even worse by the time I got to Bridge of Orchy on the race day Hope you can join us John |

John, I might see about heading out of the confines of the M25 for this one. I've done similar in the past and an even cheaper option (free) than the Bunkhouse is to Bivvy Bag it in the campsite on the other side of the bridge (where the checkpoint is set up). The Bivvy adds a lttle bit of weight to sack but nothing you can't handle. And a drop of 80 shilling in the pub makes for a proper night's sleep on the ground. |

Good plan to get 2 days in the legs but I'll be down sarff (as usual) running the Marlborough Downs Challenge as part of the Vasque ultra series. Have a good time! |

The hotel is definitely the expensive option. But Alison refused to sleep in the bukhouse again after last year, when Hugh and John's snoring through the very thin walls kept her awake all night. So, being desperate to have her company (and because she provides first class backup) I have decided to shell out the money and make this our summer holiday

Good plan guys I will be up doing the Cape Wrath Challenge 5 races in 6 days so will not be along as the marathon is on the Sat, its got a climb of 2,415 feet and is the most north westerly run on mainland Britain. |

Subversive Runner should take care if he is thinking of bivvying thereabouts. Quite a lot of forestry clearance work has been going on along the section twixt BoO and Vic Bridge. A few weeks ago the guys came across what looked like a very old and worn out tent in the forest. It was indeed very old and worn out, and had a very deceased and worn out body in it. It (tent + body) had been there for about 3 years. Relief, in a way, for the family that the "Missing Man" had been found and met an unsuspicious end. Pretty grim story, though....... So (Mike) if you stray off-trail into the woods in Scotland to do what a Man's got to do, you don't know what you might find. I therefore think that (under duress from AliB of course) whw Runner has the preferred sleeping accommodation option over Subversive Runner (and he's closer to the bar) But while you guys are there enjoying usually excellent ales to be had at BoO hotel I will be sunning myself on the Isle of Barra in the Hebrides. Haven't worked out yet how many times I'll need to run round the island to clock up c 75 miles. My Trainer / Manager / Spouse tells me I should take a week off from running whilst there, and get some sea swimming in. No wet suit allowed. (This seems a slightly different approach to that adopted by whw Runner's Trainer / Manager / Spouse for his well-being. Life is not fair) Murdo

On any other weekend... I would have loved to have done this, but I've got a couple of marathons that weekend already - doing 40 odd miles on the Friday is probably pushing my luck. |

Now the Fling is over I'm starting to plan our two day training run for 16-17 May. So far we have Ian Beattie, Neal Gibson, Davie Bell and me for the two days. Is anyone else wanting to join us? Or the other option is to join us for the Friday or Saturday. Here are the details ... Friday - meet at the Car Park at Balmaha at 10am (a slightly later start than orginally mentioned). This means that Allybea will take our bags to Bridge of Orchy Hotel. So we only need to carry what we need for the 42 mile run. Over night stay in Bridge of Orchy Hotel. Saturday - aim to get running by 9am for the 35 mile run to Fort William. Allybea and Caroline will provide support for the day - thanks! So if you want to join us leave a post here or contact me jkynaston@bigfoot.com John |

I can't make Friday but I'd like to come along for the Saturday run. Would I be able to get a lift back to Bridge of Orchy with someone? Unfortunately Lorna is away that weekend so I can't ask her to help out. Also, the last train back leaves Fort William at 17:37 so we'd need to be quite prompt to make that. |

FWIW Ian, last time I ran this I hitchhiked back to BoO without any difficulty. (But then I do have nice legs. )

Would love to join you all for the second day (saturday the 17th). Managed to get to Bein Glass Farm on Saturday in the highland fling but my Illotibial bands were too tight to continue! (muscles and joints are not the same since having twins a year ago). Have just moved to Scotland (last year) from the states and am running in the WHW race, and would love to meet up with some other local ultrarunners to get some local knowledge, and see the second half of the course! Ultrarunning in the states is vastly different to what it is here I am finding! Am also concerned about getting from Ft. William back to Bo.O. if I leave a car there? Many thanks for posting this; hope to join you all! -Morgan |

Not as such. Sort of road accident caused by idiot and I got crushed trying to get horse free. Total bummer as I had done loads of training on my holiday and was getting back to fitness |

Hope everyone taking part has a good run this weekend and nobody picks up any injuries. That would be a real shame at this stage. Im really jealous, not having the WHW on my doorstep like some of you. As Brian Mc would say, I live down saarf. Anyway, please be careful everyone, the big day is looming. Cheers Ian
