Penstock track under repair
Having posted a couple (?) of times this winter about the poor state of the track between Kinlochleven and the Penstock (in WHW terms the descent into the village by the pipeline), I'm now pleased to report the presence of diggers and resurfacing apparently starting from the bottom end (below the cranes). Not that much done yet, but I'll keep you posted! :-) Cheers P |

Pete, was it last year or the one before when water was shooting out from a leak in one of the large pipes? |

Dunno, Mike! Since I've seen leaks up there often enough to regard them as 'normal', I just couldn't say... |

Now clear evidence of resurfacing as far up as the 'wee dam' (at the top end of the long, flattish section, about two thirds of the way from the village to the Penstock). Still quite rough above that (nothing like as bad as it was further down!), but the diggers and rollers are still there, I'm guessing they'll be working on that bit next, and the bottom mile or so down to the village is probably in the best condition I can ever remember. :-) |

"Poor state of track", don't tell that to the race veterans On that subject, the Lairig Mor section needs resurfacing. And don't get me started on the "track" between Inversnaid and Beinglas!

OK, point taken! So the state of the Penstock track is immaterial to all you expert technical hill runners, nobody's interested and anonymous mocking is fun... but you can manage that without me providing the ammo on a plate, right? Cheers P |

Hello peter, please dont be put off by the above comments, any update on the state of the track is appreciated. As you well know by the time you get to that stage of the WHWR you pray for a wee bit of decent track to hobble on, and veterens are no exception, so The "confused jogger" is taking the p***, (anonymously) that says it all. |

It seemed strange that the start of the descent to Kinlochleven was incredibly rough, then it gradually got much less so; but the last bit of descent was about the roughest of the lot. Maybe it was because of the leaking black pipes squirting water all over the place and causing the track thereabouts to erode / wash away. Perhaps they should fix the leaky pipes. Peter's doing as great job updating us as "our man on the spot". More importantly (maybe) what's the state of play with the fish 'n chippy in Kinlochleven? Last time I was there I think it was closing / up for sale. This potentially could be much more serious than a few loose stones on the trail. Murdo

I also appreciate the updates on the track going into Kinlochleven. So keep them coming Peter. We will be running that way on Sat 29 March so we'll see what it's like then. Will you be around on Saturday afternoon Peter? Look out for us running through about 12.30pm! John |

@Ian Mc (re. hobbling), yes, it should be welcome at this stage of the race. So it's not going to affect the descent from the Devil's Staircase to the Penstock (a favourite bit of mine, even if I'm alone there!) but, if you survive that, you should now be able to hoof it down to the village in more relaxed mode (even after dark). @Murdo, can't see the leaks being responsible for so much erosion, but a lot of water comes out of the sky here and it needs somewhere to drain! Could also be exacerbated by motorbikes, in which case I wouldn't be surprised to see the surface cutting up a bit again by June. As for the chippy, that continues to operate under new ownership. @John, if I'm around on Saturday 29 I might well run up to join you for a bit. |

Thanks Peter; good news about the chippy. I remember last year coming down off the hills after a 10 hour day, the last 4 of which were spent thinking about chippy to the almost-exclusion of everything else. When I duly arrived, suitably salivating, at the door, I found it was closed. This is a memory of Kinlochleven that will be hard to exorcise. You mention the motor bike rally. That's a huge and very noisy event (great if you like bikes) which takes over much of this stretch of WHW. Can you tell us what dates it is on this year? So we can attend / avoid according to our inclinations. Cheers. Murdo

Scottish Six Day Trials take place from 2 to 10 May (sounds like eight days to me!), with the Pre-65s (which affect Kinlochleven the most) the first weekend (interesting time to run a quadruple Lairig Mor, as I did last year!). |

Hey folks, good news: 1. The bottom bit of track has survived a couple of trials weekends OK (NB the big one is still to come). 2. After several weeks apparently working on a side track which branches off just above the wee dam, there's now a digger and roller parked up just below the Penstock, they're working on that top bit and it looks like you're going to get a motorway all the way down to the village! :-) |
