Bob Graham

Hi Folks

I will be attempting a Bob Graham Round end of July/beginning of August this year but am short of support runners/navigators is there anyone out there who fancies giving me a hand? any help would be greatfully appreciated.

My first attempt of the BGR was in 2003, where I failed miserably and quit at Dunmail Raise (see Richard Askwiths book,'Feet in The Clouds' the chapter June, Rich supported me on section 2)then in 2005 I ran a BGR in 25.40 not 24hours!! so returning to do it this year!!

Re: Bob Graham

All the best with it Jon!

Would love to help out as I'm toying with the idea of a BG in 2009. Don't think I can though as I'll be taking annual leave after the WHWR then I need to take some more leave for DOTH in early August. Not sure there'll be much left!

If you are planning a weekend attempt I might be able to though so please post or email me your planned attempt date. I am based in Milton Keynes and have some familiarity with the Lakes but am not an expert on the BG route itself. Am however a competent navigator with sufficient mountain experience for a BG. Have done lots of multi-day hiking and scrambling, and run the OMM plus quite a few ultras.

Re: Bob Graham

Jon,

Can you give me planned dates. If it fits in with my work schedule or I can secure leave or an exchange of duty I would like to assist. I might be able to rustle up some more help. Martin Hooper was considering an attempt last year so a support role might give him a good insight.

Re: Bob Graham

Hi Jon,

I'm sure I can help out, let me know proposed dates (I guess you will have a couple of alternatives in case weather forecast is a disaster for your preferred date).

Re: Bob Graham

May I show my ignorance and ask what is a Bob Graham and why is it named that? Is it dedicated to said person?

Thanks in ignorance

Re: Bob Graham

Hi Jon - the Bob Graham Round or BG is one of the toughest fell running challenges. 24 hours to complete a traverse of 42 peaks in the Lake District covering ~74 miles and ~28,500' ascent.

http://www.bobgrahamround.co.uk/

It is named after the first to complete - Bob Graham in 1932, wearing not much more than plimsoles.

Different from WHWR because it goes over rough ground and peaks, and relies more on navigation and mountain skill. Also, there's less opportunity for motorised back-up. This is why Jon is asking for help.

Re: Bob Graham

I'm happy to support any sections really but I'll have a think and suggest some.

How many folk are supporting in total so we can work out how many sections we each cover?

Cheers.

Re: Bob Graham

hi Jon, i too am also earmarking the BG for July approx i month after WHW. All training to date has been aimed at the round which incidently makes cracking training for the WHW. Been spending every alternate weekend on sections of the round and gradually piecing them together too.3weeks ago started at ambleside, run the road up to Dunmail Raise, and did the round all the way to the Honister. escaped out through the back of Borrowdale to head back over the hills before descending on grasmere and back to ambleside. Long hard day started in darkness and finished in darkness..nigh on 15 hrs worth!!! Still had alot of running in my legs considering the huge amount of climbing..probably manage a sub 20 BG if i can keep injury free.Picked up a iffy knee when out that time. ps as i run on my own then i'll be doin the round unsupported on the fells with my other half at the few road crossing with the exception of Wasdale. Good luck in ur attempt mate and hope you become a member of the club and myself likewise.

Re: Bob Graham

Hi Jody

Thats some training run, brilliant, my aim is a sub 24 hr round, ran it once before but timed out after cocking up on Scafell (and Mike Mason wasnt navigating), but continued the round, that was 3 years ago, left it alone for having a crack at the UTMB over 2006 and 2007. Sounds like you have done plenty of recces which is the bread and butter of the round! Good luck in your attempt!! All the Best Jon

Re: Bob Graham

attempting my longest outing to date so far this coming Sunday.Early Start from Threlkeld and doin the BG route from there to Keswick.Try for a 1am start and hope to be at Dunmail come first light, incidently, have never done this section in its entirety.Aiming for ~20hrs weather permitting!! ps likely to carry all equip needed to be self sufficient in case of any hishaps. Something i think that any walker/runner should be doing at this time of year what with the winter conditions, especially if the time out in the mountains goes beyond say 10 hrs.Personally, i prefer bad weather when running in the mountains though it is nice now and again to glance at the views
