Hardmoors ultra (Cleveland Way Race)
I am organising a new race called the Hardmoors Ultra 110. The race will follow the Cleveland Way from Helmsley N.Yorkshire to Filey N.Yorkshire via the North York Moors and the Cleveland Heritage coast passing through Staithes, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Scarborough to name a few, runners will have 36 hours to complete the 110 miles and 6000 metres of ascent (ascent worked out on memory map software). The Hardmoors Ultra will be held on September 26/27/28 September 2008, entries will open on the 2nd week of January. The website is still under construction at the moment and will be open during the first week in January. For more information email me or visit the website in January

Sounds good Jonathan I backpacked the Cleveland way in August 1986, but can't remember that much about it except that it was very wet. I would certainly be up for this. Keep us posted. Colm |

Excellant idea Jonathan, I look forward to seeing the details on the website. I was on holiday in Staithes back in April and remember looking at a map of the Cleveland Way when we were out walking on the coastal path and remarking that it looked like an ideal route for an ultra race...... |

Sounds like a good race, but I suppose you'll be banning under 21's? Be nice to have found an ultra that didn't.... |

Hi guys, sounds interesting with just enough recovery time after the WHW. Hope you guys are modelling the event on Dario,s fine organisation & not one of these " events" where the first consideration has to be ..can i afford it..? |

Cheers guys for the comments! Mike I know what you mean with the over expensive ultras, a certain one is close to the time of the whw and charges a bomb. Entry for the Hardmoors will be 60 pounds (will of course include a goody bag and finishers prize) the race will run on the same support format as the Whw, a checkpoint every 8-12miles and runner will need motorised back-upMERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Hi Martin, looks very interesting. Gonna have to do some serious negotiatiting with my potential support team. Regarding the website, there's a slight oddity in the home page. The background image is deeper than my monitor will display normally (without going to "full screen") but I don't get any scroll bars to move up and down. (With IE and Firefox). Just a minor quibble (unless there's anything important lurking at the bottom of the page). |

Hi Tim I now what you mean, we are just trying to sort it out at the moment, pic should be roseberry topping. Over the next few months, pics, news etc will be added to the website. Applications for the race open on the 10th Jan.

Great. Can't be too many moorland runs for me (yes, I live in Derbyshire!)Just got to get my kneecap scraped out 1st before I know what i'm going to be capable of doing this year. I backpacked the Cleveland Way with my wife (then girlfriend) many years ago too ... wonder if she'd like to drive? |

That sounds painful!! I recced the route in November, a two day run, with a nights bivy, the highlight for me was running from Saltburn through Staithes and Whitby to Scarborough during the night. |

Hi Martin, Any Chance you could include an "overview" map of the whole course on the site along with info about the stage lengths? I'm really thinking about the length of the last two stages as that will determine who can be my support runner. |

if you click on the maps there is a culmulative distance, also if you look here http://www.sherpavan.com/accomm_booking/maps.asp?trail=CX there is a useful map and distance plot here http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/ClevelandWay/downloads.asp?PageId=64 and an interative map of the route here http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/ClevelandWay/index.asp?PageId=1 along with every BnB, pub, shop and the Inn in terms of photos there are some mega ones here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/don.burluraux/archives.htm i can but suggest that, as with the WHW, time spent on a recce will not be wasted, especially for the detours that the support team will have to take i grew up within sight of Roseberry Topping and am chuffed to bits that Jon and Co have organised a race over this spectacular terrain. |

Recce? Surely that's cheating??! I've been playing with my multimap and I must admit, I had to laugh when I saw the sadistic way the route seems to go out of its way to go over tops of hills like Roseberry. Should make for an interesting race. Thanks for the links Tomo. Great photos on that last one. Enough to whet anyone's appetite! |

Jon I hope you have received my entry Have the photos on the website of the moors been put there to taunt us? Unless we have night vision we won't see any of the sights. By my calculations if we haven't reached Saltburn shortly after sunrise we will be in trouble Colm |

Hi Colm Yeh sorry! you will miss quite a bit of the scenery, but it was either there or the coast, saying that it is still quite spectacular at night on the Cleveland hills with the deserted moorland on one side of you and on the other side of you far in the distance are the lights from Middlesborough, kind of makes you feel like you are on the edge of the wilds looking down on civilisation reminds me of a bob graham attempt a few years ago, I did the first section unsupported and arrived at Halls Fell (Blencathra) at midnight, I paused for a minute before I started the descent down into Threkeld, behind me was the deserted 'Back of Skidda' in front of me was Threkeld, support crew and civilasation, the feeling was immense and I felt as if I was on top of the world (at least until I remembered I had another 39 hills to climb I beleive even beautiful places maintain there beauty even in the dark Cheers Colm |

This race is a must for the simple reason that it passes through Whitby...one of the places along with Santorini that I want to visit. The other attraction for Whitby is to see the place where Bram Stoker based his book on Dario..... |
