Hadley,
I have been a diamond fan since 1971...in 1984 I came to the US for my studies and stayed there for 14 years and watched neil and the band perform at least 11 times (I have lost count). I came back in late 1997 and have been in the profession od advertising.
There are heaps of fans of Neil Diamond in Pakistan. Our own popular music scene is bustling. I also moonlight as a Radio producer for a music show just for fun.
Two years ago Bryan Adams performed in Karachi for 15,000 people...I didn't go because I am not really a big fan but people here are....You should google bands such as Junoon, Fuzon, Nusrat Fateh Ali (late), etc to get a taste.
You see Neil and his music is being 'marketed' as Rubin thing and my argument has always been, on his own, over the years, even the dreaded eighties and nineties, he had vital pieces of music for the world. It is very easy to criticize art, american idol being the case-in point, but it is harder to appreciate music if it is not 'showcased' properly. That is just too bad! Diamond has been a victim of that and the band too.
How many times have we seen musicians, big names, have been seen having their collective foot in their mouths because they thought they could eliminate deforestation, ecological disasters, hunger...through their music...In my eyes all they were doing was creating a platform for people to buy more of their albums...that was selfish...those issues still stand nary a dent...
Neil and his band never did that and stayed true to what music was all about, plugged out, plugged in, acoustic or otherwise...that is why I respect you all and love you all.
Thanks for acknowledging me Hadley...it makes me feel ten feet tall:)
Have a great year...love ya all!
