Read about Elmo Hudson below:
I was the first African American to win 'Boxer of the year' and the new Al VanNess appreciation trophy in Lansing, Michigan. I outboxed two state champions. The first opponent, who had seven knockouts in eight boxing matches, broke three of my ribs and dislocated my knee. I won six championships in the featherweight division and was nominated for the all-Army boxing team. My greatest battle was fought in the courts against corporate giant General Motors. In nineteen hundred and eighty three, a white employee was given a floor inspector job in the twenty-three gage crib, which was off limits to African Americans. He had less seniority than I.
General Motors maintained they went by experience, but then I had experience. After seventeen years, the case was settled out of court for an substantial amount of money.
