Greetings from Marguerite Press. We have a winner in our Black History Month Contest! Please see below:
1. Who is this woman?
In 1766 she sued her master, John Whipple of Massachusetts, charging him with restraining her liberty. In addition to winning her freedom, the court awarded her "The sum of Four Pounds" in damages. Her victory led to a large number of individual freedom suits throughout the North. Although most were successful, the legal route toward freedom was time-consuming and expensive, with legal fees and related expenses more than what the average slave could afford.
The first person to answer this question correctly wins a copy of, "How To Self-Publish That Great Novel Without Going Nuts" by Delores Thornton.
Answer is Jenny Slew. Winner is Chawana
Stay tuned next week for Question #2. |
