Before J.J.
Before J.J. the grey whale came to Sea World San Diego, the park had another baby grey whale - named GiGi (what creative names...) Gigi, however, was not a rescue and even Sea World will tell admit that. Gigi was captured (by Sea World...) as a very young calf off the California coast in March 1971 and kept in captivity for year at SWC. She was released back to the wild March 1972. The following video is all about GiGi but it's in spanish. Anyway, the visuals are interesting. Look how shallow her tank is! She was housed with what appears to be several bottlenose dolphins. And at 1:51 in the video, trainers are "riding" on her like a trained orca.. pathetic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PfaAcCBE9A |

From what I understand GiGi was a research project. A lot was learned from her and this ultimately saved J.J. |
