Gulfarium loses three marine animals (with VIDEO) Comments 8 | Recommend 1 Two died from old age, one from unknown cause July 10, 2008 - 12:48PM Wendy Victora Daily News OKALOOSA ISLAND - Gulfarium staff members are mourning the loss of three marine animals in recent weeks. Seymore, a 32-year-old California sea lion, died May 31 of age-related complications, according to a press release from the marine facility on Okaloosa Island. The average life span of a sea lion is 20 to 30 years. A 31-year-old harbor seal named Harry died June 13. Veterinarians had been treating him for age-related conditions, including a brain tumor. Seals live an average of 25 to 30 years. The death that had the greatest impact on staff was the June 10 loss of a 4-year-old California sea lion named Libby. Preliminary reports suggest that Libby may have died of a virus, the release said. However, lab work to more closely determine the cause of death is still underway. None of the other animals at the Gulfarium appear to have been affected. Seymore was a Hurricane Katrina evacuee and had been receiving medical treatment for several years. Harry came to the Gulfarium after being transferred from a northern California marine facility. He had been rescued during a 1977 stranding and deemed by federal regulatory agencies to be non-releasable. Libby was born at the Gulfarium. All three of the deaths were reported to the National Marine Fisheries Service, as required by federal law. |
