Vancouver aquarium's baby beluga treated for infection
A 2-week-old baby beluga whale born at the Vancouver Aquarium in British Columbia is reportedly doing well after being treated for an infection near her tail. VANCOUVER, British Columbia — A 2-week-old baby beluga whale born at the Vancouver Aquarium in British Columbia is reportedly doing well after being treated for an infection near her tail. Aquarium veterinarian Dr. Martin Haulena says the calf was acting lethargic over the weekend, swimming less and resting more. Staff collected blood samples to run some tests Monday. Vets noticed an abscess near the calf's tail and started her on antibiotics. Haulena says the calf responded within a few hours and perked up. He says she's once again acting as a baby calf should - swimming actively in the pool and "being a bit of a pest" toward her mother, 12-year-old Qila. The calf is her first. The baby beluga - which is not yet named - has been watched around the clock since her June 10 birth and aquarium staff are seeking advice from other aquariums where beluga calves have been raised successfully. Haulena says there is still concern the abcess may be a sign of a systemic infection or some problem with the calf's immune system, so she will be monitored carefully. Five whales born at the aquarium have died, most recently a beluga in 2005. |

Qila's calf is doing great now. She's beginning to show signs of independence, and the antibiotics seem to be working because of hte baby's updating health. She's nursing wonderfully, and Qila's proving to be a great mother. |

I'm glad that Vancouver can at least take care of a beluga calf(finally). In case anyone's wondering, NO I'M NOT A CAPTIVITYPHILE, I just think that research aquariums take better care of their animals than seaprisons and abusement parks. Vancouver takes better care of their animals than Miami Seaprison does. It wasn't their fault that Tag died, they really did try to save him. Meanwhile, the seaprison has had sea lions die from weird, preventable things, like electrocution. Random Fact:Belugas are listed as 'vulnerable' because of pollution. In the St. Lawrence river, their carcasses are handled as toxic waste. If you really want to save them, use less energy, walk instead of driving cars to local places, and DON'T LITTER! |
