Georgia Aquarium to build dolphin exhibit
http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2008/05/05/daily28.html Prepare to flip out over Flipper, Atlanta. The Georgia Aquarium on Tuesday reported plans to begin building this summer a $110 million dolphin exhibit slated to open in winter 2010. Georgia Aquarium founder Bernie Marcus and Jim Jacoby, owner of Marineland of Florida and a member of the Georgia Aquarium board, jointly announced the project, which will add 84,000 square feet to the facility, including a 1.3 million gallon exhibit that will be home to bottlenose dolphins. The building will include dolphin encounters, viewing windows and dolphin shows. The first bottlenose dolphins to live in the aquarium's new building will come from Marineland's Dolphin Conservation Center. "We have a wonderful group of dolphins at our Dolphin Conservation Center, and breeding is active. A breeding loan, which is common among aquariums and zoos, made perfect sense," Jim Jacoby said. "Our guests have been educated and entertained by these charismatic animals, some for more than twenty years, and they will be an exciting addition to the family of fish and mammals that are already at the Georgia Aquarium." The Georgia Aquarium also will give a $1.5 million contribution for a new marine animal rescue, care and research facility near Marineland outside St. Augustine, Fla. The money will be used to help build a marine animal conservation field station, which will open in 2009 and will include veterinary facilities, quarantine pools for rehabilitating rescued animals and housing for researchers and volunteers. The Georgia Aquarium will continue to support the facility annually. ---- Sounds good to me, the GA is the #1 facility in the world! |

Marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation is so expensive (cost is estimated at $3,000 per harbor seal pup), it's good to hear the Georgia Aquarium will be helping. |

IT MAKES NO SENSE WHAT SO EVER TO BUILD A DOLPHIN PRISON TO FINANCE A DOLPHIN HOSPITAL! THE VIRGINIA MARINE SCIENCE MUSEUM UNSUCCESSFULLY TRIED THIS A FEW BACK. |

"IT MAKES NO SENSE WHAT SO EVER TO BUILD A DOLPHIN PRISON TO FINANCE A DOLPHIN HOSPITAL!" Actually, it does. Aquariums who support marine mammal rescue and rehab need to get the money from somewhere. The number of animals saved by these rescue centers far outnumbers the number of captive animals in these aquariums. In addition, the average joe will not donate to these rescue centers until after visiting an aquarium and being made aware of problems faced by wild marine mammals and feeling a sense of connection, which usually starts with encountering one in captivity. A big part of my job is collecting donations for rescue centers and I see this first-hand every day. |

Unfortunately I have had problems with stalkers in the past, so sorry Russ, I do not feel comfortable saying where I work. And just because Virginia's rescue center failed, that does not imply all will. Many rescues are very successful, and a lot of valuable information on animal care is collected in them as well. |

It seems like all of the 'philes aren't posting now since you posted that letter from a former employee about how horrible the Seaprison is. I guess they are VERY ASHAMED to be associated with such a place, or such a messed up industry. I'm sure that was no real news to them but I find it odd that they ALL took a hike at the same time. Animal jailors, where did you go? Too embarrassed to show yourselves again? It sure make ya wonder, doesn't it? LOL!! |

There wasn't anything to post about. I didn't work in the animal care department, so I can't tell you from firsthand experience if their food was moldy. I can tell you with certainty that the deplorable working conditions described by Cierra were not how the training department was run...but I would not be surprised if other departments were run like that. I left the Seaquarium for a reason, but it wasn't because of how the animals under the training department's care were treated. I can't possibly argue with what Cierra wrote, because I'm sure most of what she wrote had a lot of truth in it...especially the lack of proper maintenance when it comes to park structures. But again I'll state, the animal training department is easily the best maintained and highest quality and can compete with any park you choose. I guess that's where most of the funding is going to, and the other areas suffer. |

OH YEA KIDS ONE PART OF THE PARK IS PERFECT AND THE REST IS A CRAP HOLE...SURE I BELIEVE THAT!$!$!~$ A CRAP HOLE IS A CRAP HOLE AND MSQ IS A PRIME EXAMPLE! |

I don't know how else I can say it to prove that I'm right. It's my word against yours, obviously. However, I really don't have a reason to lie to you guys. I think some of what you stand for is a worthwhile cause, and I also like to know what the "other" side thinks. Whether you believe me or not doesn't affect my day in anyway. |

I agree that the structures are crappy. Russ, I think a lot of what you say about the state of the park structurally is absolutely right. I was very happy years ago when you brought that to the right peoples' attention and they had to do something about it. I saw a lot of very shoddy, cheap construction. All I stand up for is the trainers. They are very, very careful when it comes to the animals. They fight tooth and nail for the benefit of the animals under their care . I just object to the statements that you guys make sometimes regarding the trainers being evil, the animals being captured (most of them were not captured), or the animals being "obviously" unhappy. But when it comes to the state of the Seaquarium as a whole...I will not disagree with you. |

I HAVE NEVER SAID EVIL NOT ONCE! UNEDUCATED/UNAWARE ABOUT WHAT THEY DO. IF THE PARK IS CRAP AND IT IS. THEY JUST PAINTED EVERY THING. IF THE PARK IS CRAP THAT DOES EFFECT THE LEVEL OF CARE. AND HERTZ DONT HIRE THE BEST IN THE INDUSTRY DOES HE?$$$$$$$$$ |

Let's face it. The Georgia Aquarium IS keeping dolphins captive, but aquariums do a lot better job then marine abusement parks, like the MiamiSeaquarium. Why? They may be concerned about money to a certain degree, but the better ones-like Monterey and Vancouver- are more concerned about conservation and education. Mr.Arthur 'Miser' Hertz only wants money. Therefore, educational world-class aquariums and zoos are far more likely to do a better job in caring for their animals than an abusement park. Further proof: there is a dophin at the Minnesota zoo that's in his forties(old for any dophin), whie most dolphins at the Seaquarium barely make it to their fifth birthday. I think we should concentrate more on closing the Seaquarium than the georga aquarium. |
