Was your bird housed in or near the kitchen by any chance? Because if he really had no symptoms whatsoever (did you check his body to see if he had lost weight or if he had any visible or palpable tumors?), the most likely cause is exposure to some kind of toxic fumes like the kind released by heated non-stick pans or carbon monoxide or something similar. If it had been a heart attack or a stroke, he would have been at the bottom of the cage prior to his passing.
As to your more general question of how a single bird can catch a disease if he had no contact with other birds... he can still get aflatoxin poisoning from bad seed, AGY and aspergillosis from unsanitary conditions, fatty liver/cyrrhosis/gout from an inadequate diet, etc. There are many conditions that do not involve actual contagion from other birds. |
