Superintendent responds to Blacksburg Middle School gun incident

By Albert Raboteau

Montgomery County School Superintendent Tiffany Anderson issued a letter to staff and parents this afternoon about published reports that a Blacksburg Middle School student was charged with trying to sell guns at that school last month.

Anderson wrote that the school system is only beginning to receive reports about a situation involving a Blacksburg Middle School student. Her letter states that we understand fully that to protect the integrity of their investigation there are some details they [authorities] may be unable to share immediately. I expect that the police department will communicate with me directly at the appropriate time.

The 14-year-old student was arrested 21 days ago, charged 20 days ago and has a court date, police said Monday.

Charges against the unnamed 14-year-old were reported Tuesday in The Roanoke Times, surprising parents at a school already reeling from losing three other parents in the April 16 attack at Virginia Tech. Police allege the student, whom they would not identify because of his age, tried to sell guns at the school on April 16, a Monday, as well as the preceding Thursday and Friday. Nobody bought the guns, police said.
