Superintendent responds to Blacksburg Middle School gun incident
A Blacksburg Middle School student has been charged with trying to sell stolen guns at school at least three days last month -- including April 16, the day 32 people were shot just a few miles away on the Virginia Tech campus.
Blacksburg police Capt. Bruce Bradbery confirmed Monday that a 14-year-old boy was charged April 25 after it came to light that he had been trying to sell guns at school.
Police withheld the boy's name because of his age.
It's unclear whether any of the guns were loaded or the boy carried ammunition, Bradbery said.
According to police allegations, the boy took guns to the middle school at least three days last month: April 12, 13 and 16. As many as three guns were taken to school on each occasion, Bradbery said.
The boy approached other students and tried to sell the guns but no one bought any, Bradbery said.
A family member of the boy found two guns -- one of them a Glock 9 mm, the same type of gun used by Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho -- and turned them over to a law enforcement agency, Bradbery said. The agency determined that the guns had been reported stolen from businesses in at least one other county.
That agency contacted Blacksburg police April 19.
Montgomery County schools were out that day because of the Virginia Tech shootings.
The boy was taken into custody by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office on April 24, Bradbery said. The next day he was charged by Blacksburg police. It is unclear what charges, if any, the boy might face in Cumberland County.
The boy was not in school in Blacksburg when he was taken into custody, Bradbery said, although the circumstances surrounding his absence are unclear.
Montgomery County schools Superintendent Tiffany Anderson referred questions Monday to the police department.
Blacksburg police and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office recovered 11 guns from the boy's home, which is just outside the Blacksburg town limits, Bradbery said.
The boy was charged with 11 counts of intent to sell stolen property valued at more than $200 and two counts of possession of a firearm on school property.
He is being held in the New River Valley Juvenile Detention Center in Christiansburg and has a court appearance scheduled for next month.
