Welcome to the Ache Forum. This was created to promote community within the underground music / art scene. It will (hopefully) be a forum of inspiration and positivity, and help us get to know eachother and get organized.
I welcome you to discuss means of getting active in your scene, music, art, and things that make you happy. Critisism is great too, but if I feel your comment is counter-productive (ie. critical for the sake of controversy alone, or to prove a bad-ass you are), I'll take it off.

Commence communal activity!

best or worst of myspace

So, there's a gagillion bands on myspace, as we all know... It's a pretty daunting task to try to find anything interesting on there.. has anyone come accross any secret gems?

Here's a couple of things I've come accross that I thought where pretty cool:

http://www.myspace.com/plancton9

http://www.myspace.com/marceltuerkowsky
(the Kitano song is especially great, I thought)

anything else?

Re: best or worst of myspace

Yeahhh plancton9 sounds pretty cool. It reminds me of Kit Clayton's style, actually.

And MySpace hardly ever works for me... Barely any of the songs ever load, and to me it seems like they put the more popular artists on better servers, because their stuff always loads... But when I try to listen to someone who only has like 1000 views, half the time it won't load...

I think the whole MySpace site needs some sort of overhaul. A lot about it really bugs me... The site is very confusing to go through at first. Being able to load 4 songs on and the ability to network yourself with other musicians and people is definitely cool, but it kinda sucks that it's soooo incredibly buggy. I lose interest in looking for new musicians with it since it's like winning the lottery when the song loads...

Re: best or worst of myspace

Yeah it's really kind of a double-edged sword as well...

on one hand, you've got a whole networking thing, and an ability to host music and share it with people, which is rad, because there's very little hierchy, as far as 'big band' versus 'little band' - there's an equlity there that's pretty interesting. (unless your server theory is true)
But on the other hand it's so insanely oversaturated - it's almost too easy in a way, and therefore it's very hard to grab anyone's attention.
I feel that that's a con against the file sharing thing as well. The albums that I consider my all time favourites are ones that I might not have liked when i first bought them, but with time I learned to appreciate - I think that that's happening less and less since there's a kind of overwhelming A.D.D. quality to having the ability to check anything out and make an instant choice of whether you like it or not. This may have a negative impact on the quality of music that's created as well. If a musician knows that he or she has to create music that people will instantly like, then they may not take as many creative risks. We'll all sound like Weezer.

Re: best or worst of myspace

It's definitely great for an artist. I like to get feedback, so it's good to be able to just post songs and have people comment on them.

Though one of the major things that I find with a lot of these art "networking" sites is that some people treat it like a popularity contest, which ruins it a bit. There are those people that use some sort of bot to add a bunch of random people, just so someone will listen to their music, which I think is unfair. Like I used to use DeviantArt to post my photography and other art to try and get feedback but I found that people would only comment on someone's art who adds them or something, and rarely would people actually give constructive criticism.

I guess what I wish is that sites like MySpace were more geared towards artists networking and helping eachother get better.

And yeah, I definitely agree about the fact that some of the best music is the ones that grow on you. It seems to make sense though, because the best albums are the ones you can listen to many times, and just notice new things, and not get bored. The one major thing I hate about most pop music is I find people only care about the beat, if there is some beat (even something completely simple) they'll think it's catchy... I think that ties into the whole mentality of only listening for like 5 seconds to decide if you like something, because there are so many great songs that slowly build up at the beginning without having any drums. But yeah I definitely never thought about how filesharing has effected that, it's a very valid point...

And I tried looking for music on MySpace, this was the most interesting thing I found from just clicking through people's friend's lists... http://www.myspace.com/b_l_o

Re: best or worst of myspace

That Marcel guy is pretty awesome!

I agree on the ADD thing. It's all about getting some sort of hook into the first 20 seconds and that sucks. The networking though is awesome especially for small bands who can team up - I've had some neat experiences there. The feedback is usually pretty stupid so that doesn't work for me though.

hmmm, i just read this post now but i can already tell i'll be thinking about it for a while. your theory seems valid as far as most internet-based music popularity goes... the cbc radio3 podcast is another "double-edged sword" as far as i'm concerned.. it's the most popular podcast in canada (even peter mansbridge is a fan) and has tons of international listeners, which means it's done AMAZING things for boosting the profile of canadian independent music. on the other hand, it showcases mostly accessable examples of canadian indie, pop, (pop)punk, hip-hop and electronic music... as a result, truly great but abrasive metal and punk bands such as rammer or ****ed up (to say nothing of more experimental artists such as, say, secret mommy) are as ghettoized as ever, and invisible to people who might otherwise think they're hearing a full range of canadian music.

on the flip side of all this, you have a website like pitchforkmedia.com which has pros and cons of its own. on they one hand, they basically propelled such previously-thought-unpalatable acts as deerhoof and animal collective to the indie-rock mainstream. deerhoof PACKED their first ever vancouver show, based largely on well-deserved internet hype... but while stuff like that is great to see, i really wish there were 5 or 6 websites with the tastemaking clout of pitchfork, instead of just one. the full range of independent music becomes rather homogenized when sufjan stevens is ubiquitiously hailed as a genius, but bands like pit er pat are overlooked because their pitchfork reviewers failed to hear any "pop hooks". i guess there will always be popular and unpopular, cool and uncool bands, and the democratizing potential of the internet has its limits (see the weakerthans for a group that's strangely denounced by most, if not all, pitchfork contributers)... i just hate to think that thousands of people might choose to download rather than purchase a band's latest album because it received a 6.8 rather than an 8.6 from one freaking website. and a 3.1 review might as well be your band's death-knell... unlike buddyhead, people take pitchfork SERIOUSLY.

anyway, that was quite the rant. just thought i'd offer the flipside of the coin, as deerhoof certainly sound nothing like weezer...

p.s. i have noticed, though, that the new bands i've been "discovering" online lately all fit into my comfort zone of mid-90's sounding indie powerpop. and i listened to each of the artists in the first post of this thread for about 30 seconds before closing the window. like you, most of my favourite records are by bands like fugazi, mission of burma, shellac.. not exactly "first listen" type stuff. not sure how i can reconcile all this...
