Ache

Welcome to the Ache Forum. This was created to promote community within the underground music / art scene. It will (hopefully) be a forum of inspiration and positivity, and help us get to know eachother and get organized.
I welcome you to discuss means of getting active in your scene, music, art, and things that make you happy. Critisism is great too, but if I feel your comment is counter-productive (ie. critical for the sake of controversy alone, or to prove a bad-ass you are), I'll take it off.

Commence communal activity!

Running a label

I'm starting a label and since the artists I wanna put out aren't very big I wonder how one runs a small label without getting ruined?

Re: Running a label

Honestly, I wish I knew! I'm just getting to the point where I'm able to start working off my enourmous debt.

Re: Running a label

If that was common knowledge, everyone would have their own record label.

Or atleast I would.

well yeah...

but I mean... It's okay to go broke... I just don't wanna go like "oh so you can't pay the bank... then we'll just chop off your penis and sell it on ebay"-kind of broke...

Re: Running a label

ever considered grants? deem yourself a non-profit organization.

i've never made a cent off any show that i've put on. the only money i've ever made related to music are the pennies i got for writing.

i always wondered how people sustain themselves when doing things like this. Art and such.

Canada functions with the grant system and has a lot of money for supporting the arts – specifically for projects that don’t function with a means to profit.

You just need to run on your own for a few years, gain a reputation amongst the community and apply for $$ for projects. i was stupid and didn't really care to go by any particular name - now i'm looking for grants to do bigger projects with less risk.

Re: Running a label

The problem I've run into with Canadian grants is that everything must be Canadian for that particular project... works well if you're putting out a Canadian artist, but otherwise, it doesn't seem to help... I could be wrong though... anyone?

Re: Running a label

i've applied for numerous grants to put out records from factor and canada council and conseil des arts et lettres du quebec to no avail. seems the stuff i like isn't out there enough for the arts councils and not commercial enough for factor. i think a good point was brought up in developing a reputation thus proving you're not going to flake. i think the most important thing is to be patient and not rush into putting out every band you fall in love with. also helps if the bands tour, obviously. if you can recoup your expenses off your first couple releases i'd be stoked and the best way to sell the discs is at shows for sure. i've been trying my hand at this label thing for about a year now and it's been a lot of fun. i've met some awesome people and although i've accumulated some debt it's been worth it.
