Argh! I've just discovered that, according to a report in the Cambridgeshire Press, a Charles Kisby was caught trying to auction his wife in Wisbeach, Cambridgeshire in May 1840!! The local police turned up to stop the sale, but she was later sold to a local man for 1 guinea. Poor woman, they don't even name her in the report!
My greatx4 uncle Charles Kisby is possibly the only man of that name extant in that area at the time. He married Maria Bass. He disappears from all records after 1837. I'm quite intrigued, nay concerned, that it might be him!! |
