Austin to Give Disount Cards to Cast & Crew

Austin builds on film-friendly reputation

For immediate release
Nov. 5, 2007

Austin Mayor Will Wynn and Bob Lander, President and CEO of the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, today announced the launch of a new film industry discount program.

The Austin Film Commission, in partnership with the City, is offering Austin: Now Playing discount cards to cast and crew members producing films in Austin. The goal is to help showcase local businesses by providing discounts to a variety of services.

“The film industry pumps millions of dollars into our local economy, and this is one way we can help drive business to participating merchants,” Wynn said. “It also serves as a great incentive for film crews who come to Austin, and that’s a huge win for keeping our City in the spotlight as a leader in the film industry.”

“The Austin Film Commission and the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau are delighted to have been a part of developing a connection between the national film industry, local businesses and our local film industry,” Bob Lander said. “It further demonstrates our commitment as a community to making Austin the most film-friendly city in the U.S.”

According to the Texas Film Commission, Austin led all Texas cities in 2006 with film and television production budgets totaling $131.9 million. That figure represents 45 percent of last year’s $291.3 million in total film budgets across the state.

Qualified industry professionals on location in Austin will receive discount cards valid through the duration of their projects. For a list of participating businesses or to register as a new film-friendly vendor, visit www.austintexas.org/film/. Austin: Now Playing window decals and cash register display cards are visible at participating locations.

The discount program compliments House Bill 1634 passed by the Texas Legislature earlier this year. HB 1634 provides financial incentives to filmmakers who bring film and television projects to Texas.

Plans are also underway to renovate the Austin Film Studios at the Mueller redevelopment site, which is a $5 million project approved by voters as part of the 2006 bond package.
