Human Rights Torch relay

Dear all,

You are warmly invited to support the Human Rights Torch Relay when it arrives in the UK during the last week of October 2007.

This torch relay is a global event that covers 5 continents, 25 countries and over 100 cities. The torch was lit in Athens on the 9th of August and will pass through over 10 countries in Europe before ending in London in October. After that it will be passed on to other continents.

The purpose of this event is to raise awareness of the human rights abuses in China as China's human rights record has not improved at all, which contradicts what they promised to the UN and the rest of the world. Instead it is getting worse and the Government is using the Olympics as an excuse to arrest more innocent people as well as to extend the terms of those including Falun Gong practitioners and human rights activists such as Gao Zhisheng. News reports of villagers being evicted from their homes by force in order to make room for Olympic developments and a tight rein of censorship over the media are well known yet clearly undermine the Olympic spirit. We would like the world to know the current human rights situation. This is why we are having this symbolic run - the Human Right Torch relay.

"Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles." This is the Olympic principle, but the human rights abuse in China does not fit in with
Olympic spirit.

To uphold moral values and send the clear message to China that the Olympic games and human rights abuses cannot co-exist we would be grateful if you would consent to bear the Human Rights Torch when it arrives in London and become one of the runners. This truly is a historic event – the first of its kind and we would be very grateful for your support.
